Russia ends spring sowing, keeps grain crop forecast

Russia has completed its
spring sowing and still expects this years grain crop to
reach 85 million tonnes, the Agriculture Ministry said on
Thursday.
«Under favourable weather conditions we may reap 85 million
tonnes of grain,» Minister Yelena Skrynnik said in a
statement.
Russia has finished sowing spring grains on the targeted
area of 30.2 million hectares, the statement said. Total
grain harvesting area for this year is estimated at over 44 million hectares, it said.
Last years drought cut the crop to 60.9 million tonnes
from 97 million in 2009 and 108 million in 2008.
The ministry said sunflowers had been sown on 7.2 million
hectares, 54,000 hectares more than a year ago, sugar
beets on 1.2 million hectares 95,000 hectares more than a
year ago and rapeseeds on 672,000 hectares, 57,000 hectares
more.
