US major crops seen expanding 4 pct in 2011- USDA
15.02.2011 09:59 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
U.S. farmers will increase
plantings of the eight major crops this year by 4 percent to sow the most acres in 14 years, led by unexpectedly
higher corn and soybean seedings, the government
said on Monday.
The U. S. Agriculture Departments first estimate of newyear
crops is normally set aside by traders who will wait
until next weeks up-to-date view. Still, corn prices fell
from a 21/2-year high as bullish momentum was undercut
by prospects of large plantings and a slight dip in ethanolfuel
use.
The USDA said farmers will sow 10.1 million more acres
this year compared to 2010, to 255.3 million, with all major
crops seeing an increase except rice. The forecast illustrates
the wide-scale response to the highest fourthquarter
agricultural prices on record.
