Belarus’ food export soars to $1.8bn in January-July

In January-July 2010 Belarus exported $1,782.3 million worth of food, 49.9% up from the year before. At the same time food import rose by 4.9% to $917.1 million, the National Statistics Committee told BelTA.
The food export increase is attributed to the rising export of milk, concentrated cream, dried cream in cost terms ($146.9 million up), sugar ($130.9 million up), cheese and curd ($99.7 million up), beef ($45.3 million), butter ($44 million up), milk and non-concentrated cream ($32 million).
In January-July 2010 average export prices for milk and dairy products rose by 36.7% in comparison with January-July 2009 to $2,464 per tonne, prices for meat and meat products went up 3.1% to $3,137 per tonne.
In January-July 2010 food accounted for 13.4% of Belarus’ total export while in January-July 2009 it stood at 10.8%, with the food share in the export of consumer goods at 59.9% and 56.1% respectively.
Dairy and meat products make up the bulk of Belarus’ food export. In January-July 2010 the export of milk and dairy products in natural terms totaled 353,800 tonnes, 20.5% up on the same period of last year. Belarus exported 113,400 tonnes of meat and meat products, 23.46% up.
Meanwhile, Belarus imported 56.5% less cereal crops (77,400 tonnes), 5.7% less frozen fish (61,700 tonnes), and 20.5% less animal feed (29,300 tonnes). Belarus’ import of vegetable oil rose 3.3% to 62,100 tonnes.
In January-July 2010 food accounted for 5.2% of Belarus’ total import while in January-July 2009 it stood at 5.7%. Food accounted for 31.9% of Belarus’ total import of consumer goods (36.6% in January-July 2009). The foreign trade surplus amounted to $865.2 million while in January-July 2009 it stood at $314.6 million.
