Rains in China harm grain growth, benefit corn
30.07.2010 12:54 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The ongoing torrential rains and flood in many regions of China will harm the countrys grain production but may help relieve corn producers from the adverse effects of drought that happened in 2009, traders said.
Corn production is at normal levels, as rainfalls eased the drought that has affected some regions for months, said a trader based in Shanghai.
But if the torrential rains persist in the coming weeks, things will be hard to predict, he added.
Chinas grain producing areas are expected to have sunshine next month, but some signs of calamity have appeared.
Floods generally benefits corn production, and experience shows a good corn harvest usually comes after a flood, said Feng Lichen, general manager of chinamaize.com.cn.
Corn will not be affected by flooding in the initial growth period, he added.
China suffered a fall in corn production in 2009 as a result of drought.
This year looks like it will be a bumper harvest for corn, but a clear judgment will be made one month after the flood recedes, he said.
Hanver Li, an analyst with China JCI, forecast China would import 1.7 million tonnes of corn in 20092010, as domestic production declined by 12 per cent to 136 million tonnes.
