Sugar Cane Diesel in Brazil Next Year
26.07.2010 11:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Sugarcane diesel is to be sold in Brazil starting in 2011, a US biotech company said after inaugurating an on-road test in partnership with the Sao Paulo municipal government..
The Brazilian division of California-based Amyris Biotechnologies is to start commercial production of sugar cane biodiesel next year.
The company is to build a plant in Sao Paulo state with Grupo Sao Martinho, one of Brazil’s largest sugar and ethanol producers.
According to a report in the Latin American Herald Tribune, Amyris and the government of Sao Paulo began a pilot project this week in which three urban-transport buses will run for six months on a mixture of 10 per cent sugarcane-based diesel and 90 per cent commercial diesel (B5 S-50).
Another three buses will run on 100 per cent ordinary diesel as a comparison.
All diesel fuel in Brazil must be blended with five per cent biodiesel, but this is the first time that sugarcane-based biodiesel will be used.
