Latvia. Riga Port’s H1 throughput down 1.4%, to 14,5m tons

Cargo turnover at the port of Riga (Latvia) in January-June 2010 fell by 1.4% from the same period last year, to 14,5 million tons, the Port Authority statement said.
Bulked cargo volume decreased by 10.5%, to 8.62 million tons, liquid cargo dropped by 10.1%, to 2.96 million tons, while general cargo jumped 60.8% to 2.98 million tons, the press release said.
Of total cargo turnover, coal volume surged by 40.1% and oil products by 20.2%, lumber by 14.9%, container trade increased by 8.1%, fertilizer 4.8%.
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava (Western Dvina), the total area of the port 6.348 ha, length of berths 13.818 m, maximum ship draft at the berths 12.2 m. Transit cargoes make up 80% of overall freight traffic, carried to / back the CIS countries. Last year’s statistics showed the Port of Riga handled 29.72 million tons, a year-over-year 0.5% growth.
