The output may rise from the estimates of 18.7MT for this year ending Sept. 30
Indias sugar production may increase to more than 25 million metric tons (MT) in the new crop year that starts in October as record prices encourage farmers to grow more cane this year.
Output may rise from 18.7 MT estimated for this year ending on Sept. 30, M. N. Rao, deputy director general of the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), was quoted as saying.
The ISMAs s earlier forecast was 23 MT for 201011.
Credit rating agency ICRA had in a June report estimated sugar output for the coming crop season at 25 MT.
Data released by the Union Agriculture Ministry shows a 13.3% rise in cane acreage, at 4.74 million hectares as on July 2, compared to 4.18 million hectares on the same date last year.
