Serbian farmers protest against low wheat price
01.07.2010 11:30 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Belgrade. Serbian farmers, claiming that the sale price of wheat covers only half their costs, began a protest on Tuesday, with some driving their tractors along major roads and into urban centers in the northern province of Vojvodina, Xinhua informs.
The largest such protest was held in Sremska Mitrovica, where over 500 tractors crowded into the town, according to the Belgrade television station B92.
Farmers are also reportedly upset about the fact that they are required to pay taxes for drainage, although most of their fields were flooded this spring due to heavy rains, drastically reducing yields.
Farmers have warned that they expect talks with government officials by Friday to address these issues. Otherwise, they will intensify their protest activities.
