Slauta: 2004 grain crop can hit 40 million tons, if weather permits
16.08.2004 09:13 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
"This year grain crop can reach 40 million tons in case weather conditions are favorable," - Viktor Slauta, Minister of Agrarian Policy, told to journalists. As to him, agrarians have still to harvest early grains at area of 4.9 million ha; grain yielding capacity, by now averaging 2.99t/ha, may decline due to rains; presently harvested grain crop totals 21.7 million tons. Slauta also said, though as to preliminary forecasts, by now in fields a ~ 34 million tons’ early grains’ crop as well as a ~ 6 million tons’ maize crop have ripened, yet, due to detrimental weather conditions, these crops are hardly possible to be totally harvested. "This is simple arithmetic, - said Slauta, - let’s assume, early grains’ and maize yielding capacities will reach correspondingly only 2.5t/ha and 3.0t/ha, - even in this case it will be a good crop! Yet, You see, what’s going on, - added Minister, - fields are being rain-flooded!"
