Vistive Soybeans: A Commitment to Better Food
09.06.2010 09:28 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Agriculture sits at the center of finding solutions for many of the world’s issues food security, renewable energy sources, and climate change to name a few. Isn’t it only appropriate it should play a role in improving human health?
Thanks to products like Vistive low linolenic soybeans, which have been marketed by Monsanto since 2005, U.S. consumers are eating the foods they’ve always loved minus the harmful trans fats.
After more than 10 years of breeding research, Monsanto’s scientists lowered the level of the naturally occurring linolenic acid in the soybean. This results in a more stable soybean oil, which virtually eliminates the need for hydrogenation the process that creates trans fats. As a result, the oil from Vistive soybeans allows food companies to produce fried foods, baked goods, snack products and other processed foods with lower or zero grams of trans fat.
Linda Funk, executive director of the The Soyfoods Council, has said: «The food industry has used partially-hydrogenated soybean oils for the last 20-some years,» Funk said. «It was convenient, it was easy and it was plentiful. Everyone is now trying to find solutions, but they still want the same functionality and taste of their typical partially-hydrogenated oil. Vistive really hits that mark. The soybean industry was very innovative and ahead of its time in having that solution available.»
