Freight traffic volumes passing through Port Marseille, the Frances largest port, in the first quarter, 2010 gained 3% to 21.46 million tons vs 20.88m a year earlier, the Journal of Commerce reports.
In March the Port’s throughput was at 7.99 million tons. Conventional and breakbulk cargo jumped 52% to 527,000 tons (219,000 tons in March). The breakbulk cargo volumes increased thanks to growth in steel shipments followed the resumption of the ArcelorMittal mill. The steel volumes in Q1,10 reached 490,000 tons, a 73-percent surge from 284,000 tons in Q1,09. In March the Port handled 198,000 tons, up 110% from the same period in 2009. However, the Port statistics showed a 41-percent drop in other conventional cargoes, to 37,000 tons, against 62,000 tons handled in Q1,09.
The first-quarter container trade via Marseille rose by 17% to 245.029 TEUs. In March container counts gained 15% to 92 935 thousand TEUs thanks to the launched Med-Gulf Express service to the United States and Mexico and the extension of CSAVs Asia-Eastern Mediterranean service to the southern French port.
Port of Marseille is located in the south of France, on the shore of the Gulf of Lions of the Mediterranean Sea. There are petrochemical and chemical industries based in the area of the port, as well as shipbuilding and ship repair facilities.
