Ukraine to sow spring crops (2009 crop) at 16.4 mn ha

As to regions preliminary data, Ukrainian spring crops sown areas (for 2009 crop) will total 16.4 mn ha, reported Ministry of Agrarian Policy press-service. As to press-service, within this year agricultural companies plan to sow spring grains and leguminous crops at ≈ 8 mn ha (incl. wheat − 0.3 mn ha, barley − 3.7 mn ha and maize − 2.6 mn ha). Besides, sugar beet is planned to be sown at 0.4 mn ha (sunflower − 3.5 mn ha, soybeans − 0.6 mn ha, potatoes − 1.4 mn ha, vegetables − 0.6 mn ha and feed crops − about 2 mn ha). As to regions preliminary data, Ukrainian total agricultural crops sown areas (for 2009 crop) will be 27.4 mn ha (up 1.6% against 2008), with grains sown areas reaching 16.3 mn ha (up ≈ 4% as of 2008). As to Ministry of Agrarian Policy, within this year sown areas will be enlarged not only due to grains sown areas widening, yet also due to feed crops. It is to be admitted, this year industrial crops sown areas are expected to shorten by 8.5% against last year (incl. sunflower − by 17%). As to press-service, agrarians have already prepared 13.4 mn ha soil for spring crops sowing; also, agrarians are going to fertilize winter crops at ≈ 8 mn ha. Besides, Ministry of Agrarian Policy press-service reports (referring to regions/research institutions data) now country winter crops condition is good/satisfactory at over 90% sown areas.
