Veterinary Medicine Service imposes poultry meat import embargo
30.01.2004 12:29 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Ukrainian Veterinary Medicine State Department has abolished emabargo imposed last year upon import of poultry meat as well as any products of its processing from territories of Germany, Belgium and Netherlands. Embargo, which had been imposed due to a number of cases of dangerous animal (poultry) infectious disease, i.e. highly pathogenic avian influenza, registered in these countries, has been abolished after International Epizootic Bureau’s having reported about solving the problem. As to Petro Verbytskyi, International Epizootic Bureau has cancelled the ban upon poultry meat export from these countries’ territories after six months have elapsed since avian influenza had been liquidated in these countries. Simultaneously, Ukrainian Veterinary Medicine State Department has imposed an embargo upon import of poultry meat as well as any products of its processing from territories of Cambodia (since Jan 29), Japan, Thailand and Vietnam (since Jan 26), due to registration in the territories of these countries of a dangerous animal (poultry) infectious disease, i.e. highly pathogenic avian influenza. That was reported during a press conference by Petro Verbytskyi, Chairman of Veterinary Medicine State Department, who said as well that by now State Veterinary Service is proving that information as well as waiting for official confirmation of this disease having been registered in Laos territory. In case of suspicions proving true, poultry meat export from this country is to be banned as well. As reported, Veterinary Medicine State Department in Oct 2003 has also imposed an embargo upon import of poultry meat as well as any products of its procesing from territory of administrative region Hong-Kong (China), due to registration in its territory of a dangerous animal (poultry) infectious disease, i.e. highly pathogenic avian influenza. Within years of independence, Ukraine did not import any poultry farming production from Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand or Japan.
