UN: Large-scale measles vaccination campaign begins within Ebola-hit Congo province
12.07.2019 14:36 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of this week, the UNICEF health workers have started a massive measles vaccination campaign within the Ituri province (north-east Congo), a region that is within the grip of the second deadliest Ebola virus outbreak on record, UN Radio says referring to the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF report.
As to the report, the UNICEF health workers are going to inoculate 67,000 children. It is to be admitted, they’re just a small fraction of the 400,000 people displaced by an upsurge of communal violence and clashes between Government forces and non-State armed groups within the resource-rich area.
Reportedly, about 2,000 people have died from measles within Congo so far this year, more than two-thirds of them children under five. In meanwhile, the latest data show that there are about 115,000 cases of suspected measles within Congo, much up against 65,000 as of last year.
