04.07.2019 11:36 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of this week, within Mexico City, a High-level meeting on migration, development and food security in Mesoamerica has taken place, FAO reports.
It is to be admitted, the 2 day meeting aimed to promote the Mesoamerican rural development and the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger so that migration becomes an option and not a necessity. The meeting has been attended by over 100 delegates from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico to discuss a joint proposal to tackle migration challenges within Mesoamerica through a comprehensive development plan.
«Migration must be a voluntary act, and not a forced last resort,» FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said at the event.
«Poverty, hunger, climate change, insecurity that is, severe underdevelopment create a perfect storm in which thousands of people see only one way out: to emigrate. The fundamental solution to forced migration is development,» he told
As to the report, the meeting participants adopted an action program including, among other aspects, rural climate resilience and the adaptation of agriculture to climate change; the creation of agricultural and non-agricultural employment and the generation of income and the promotion of family farming.
These measures will be in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Compact on Migration, adopted by the United Nations Assembly as of Dec 2018.
