Indian sugar output to drop to 3-year low due to severe drought
13.06.2019 22:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As to Prakash Nikenavare, Managing Director of the Indian National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Plants, within the next season the Indian sugar output can fall from the current record high down to a 3-year low as the arid weather conditions and the monsoons’ absences are drying the sugar cane areas within the country main sugar output regions, Ukrainian National Association of Sugar Producers says referring to the Business Standard report.
As to Nikenvare, India (which is competing with Brazil for the status of the world biggest sugar producer) is possible to reduce its sugar output from 33 million tons (as of this MY) down to 2829 million tonnes of sugar within the next MY (to begin as of this Oct 1,2019).
As to him, presently the drought damages the cane sugar areas within the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, with the monsoon being delayed. All that reduces the prospects for the next MY Indian sugar output since the cane sugar crop decline will eventually shorten the Indian domestic market current record high sugar reserves, thus reducing the Indian sugar export and promting the global sugar prices.
It is to be admitted, within last few years India periodically changes its status of the sugar importer to the sugar exporter depending on its domestic sugar output fluctuations.
