As of this week, at the UN Headquarters, a regular session of the annual Commission on Population and Development has started working, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, this year the Commission is highlighting the important role that the global population trends play within the promoting sustainable development.
In particular, the Commission will examine many gains that have been made within the implementing of the Programme of Action (adopted by the Commission as of 1994), but also the gaps and shortfalls within achieving its goals and objectives: these must be discussed, says the UN, if we are to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (the UN plan of action for bringing about a better and more sustainable future for all).
It is to be admitted, while speaking within the Commission meeting, Maria-Francesca Spatolisano, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Inter-Agency Affairs, drew attention to the four demographic «mega-trends» that are shaping the world in fundamental ways: population growth, population ageing, international migration and urbanization.
As to the report, while speaking within the Commission meeting, the UN experts told that the humanity further development must be people-centred, and the governments worldwide are to pay attention to strengthening equal access to health, education and human dignity for all persons, thus anticipating the vision and values of the 2030 Agenda - which are the humanity common blueprint for peace and prosperity, for people and the planet now and within the years to come.
