FAO and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition join efforts to assure healthy diets
08.03.2019 21:03 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, FAO and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) signed an agreement to join forces to enhance the availability and affordability of nutritious foods for everyone within developing countries, FAO reports.
As to the report, the agreement aims to enable inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systems’ development, focusing on new approaches which engage small and medium companies (or SMEs) to promote market-based solutions as a key tool for improved nutrition and make the urban food systems more nutrition-sensitive.
As to the report, FAO and GAIN will also work to make urban food systems more nutrition-sensitive, through support to GAIN Urban Governance for Nutrition Program and FAO Urban Food Agenda. It is to be admitted, now over 50% of the world population lives within urban areas and it is expected to rise to 70% by 2050. This creates an enormous challenge to food production and supply. Food and nutrition security of poor urban populations remains at risk as a consequence of the volatility and rapid boost of foods’ prices, natural disasters and climate change effects.
