Experts: European dairy sector to face a crisis
06.09.2018 22:18 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of now, European dairy farming faces a difficult situation due to summer heat and drought, Ukrinform says referring to the Ukrainian Milk Producers Association report.
«Summer heat and drought have caused the feeds shipments’ delays, cows’ slaughtering and milk yields’ decline. So, presently, experts expect the European dairy sector (estimated EUR12 milliard) is going to face a crisis. A vivid example of the problems which the dairymen have to tackle is Ireland, one of the European biggest raw milk producers. Within Ireland, the famous green meadows, which had given this country a poetic name of Green Island, now have, after having suffered a record-severe heat, burned out and became brown. So, the rations of millions of Irish cows have shortened, and so the raw milk yields have also declined,» the report reads.
«And these are just the short-term problems. The heat can also influence the cows’ reproduction process, so the experts do not rule out the cows’ fertility decline. However, the scale of this problem will be possible to estimate only within 9 months,» the report says.
