China has been offered to introduce a "sugar" tax
21.05.2018 18:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of recent, the Chinese scientists have offered the Chinese government to introduce a «sugar tax» to combat child obesity within the country. It goes about introduction of the excise duty on the domestic market high sugar content drinks,
Ukrainian National Association of Sugar Producers says referring to the EKD! report.
As to the report, the offer has been elaborated by the Beijing University and the UN Children’s Fund experts.
As to the experts, within 19982008 the Chinese children had doubled high sugar content carbonated beverages’ consumption. Within this period, every child within the Chinese cities consumed about half a liter of sweet carbonated beverages each day - what, finally, has become one of the main reasons for the Chinese childhood obesity (now ranked first within the world).
It is to be admitted, by now the excise taxes on sweet sparkling beverages have already been introduced by Mexico (as of 2014) and Great Britain (2018). At the same time, some countries have already abolished this excise duty due to the fact that it had become unacceptable for their low-income population (which turned out to be these beverages’ main consumer).
