WHO: Congo Ebola outbreak not yet a global ‘health emergency’, but strong response to disease vital
21.05.2018 16:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) called an emergency meeting to «consider the international risks» of the latest outbreak of the deadly disease Ebola, which had moved to an urban area within Congo (DRC), UN Radio reports.
As to the report, within the meeting, the WHO experts admitted that the Ebola outbreak didn’t meet the criteria to be deemed a «public health emergency of international concern»; however, at same time, the WHO Emergency Committee issued a Public Health Advice which advised the Congolese Government and all other actors to remain engaged in a «vigorous response» and called on the international community to support efforts on the ground.
«Without this, the situation is likely to deteriorate significantly,» the Public Health Advice says.
It is to be admitted, an outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) was declared within a remote town within the Congo Equateur province as of this year May 8. Since then at least one case has been confirmed outside the initial zone. As of this year May 17, a patient within the provincial capital, Mbandaka, was confirmed as having contracted the disease.
