17.05.2018 15:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of this week, the R20 Austrian World Summit (a long-term initiative to help regions, States and cities implement the Sustainable Development Goals and meet the Paris Agreement targets) has taken place within Vienna, Austria, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, while addressing the Summit, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that presently none of the world challenges loom as large as climate change.
Guterres reiterated his belief that global warming poses an «existential threat» to humanity.
As to the report, Guterres admitted that the world governments must use all their resources to build a sense of urgency, to raise ambition, while keeping temperature rises within the years ahead, as close to 1.5 degrees Celsius as possible.
As to him, there is a reason to hope for improvement.
Guterres told «the world is seeing a groundswell of climate action», citing examples, including Moroccos building of a solar farm «the size of Paris, that will power over a million homes by 2020» and Chinese achievement in already passing it’s 2020 goal of producing 105 gigawatts of solar power capacity.
He stressed that the use of solar, wind and cutting-edge technologies (such as electric vehicles or energy from algae within the ocean) promises a new era of clean air.
