‘Bad’ fats targeted in new global health guidelines
07.05.2018 13:52 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of last week, the WHO (UN World Health Organization) launched an initiative urging people worldwide to reduce their consumption of artery-clogging fatty foods, Ukrinform says referring to the FAO report.
It is to be admitted, the WHO is going to prevent some of the 17 million deaths caused every year by cardiovascular diseases, which have been linked to food containing saturated fats and trans-fats.
As to the report, the WHO wants adults and children to reduce their intake of these fats to just 10% of total daily energy needs.
And the UN health agency wants trans-fats - which are found in baked and fried foods and cooking oil - to account for just 1% of daily calorie intake.
However, at same time, the FAO admits that there are healthier alternatives to food laden with «bad» saturated and trans-fats. It is to be admitted, saturated fats and trans-fats are often labelled as «hydrogenated» - an indication that hydrogen has been added, making them easier to use).
So, Dr. Francesco Branca, WHO nutrition director, urged the Governments worldwide to ensure that manufactured products do not use hydrogenated vegetable oil in order to get rid of the dangers of the excess trans-fat.
As to the report, Dr. Branca admitted the West European countries had «almost eliminated» the trans-fats usage within food industry, while Denmark had banned it completely.
