22.11.2017 10:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, while speaking at a high-level conference at UN Headquarters in New York to mobilize support for Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations affected by hurricanes Irma and Maria within this year Sept, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said Caribbean countries need support to rebuild within the aftermath of recent devastating hurricanes and take effective action on climate change, UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, Guterres had visited the islands of Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda, hard hit by the storms, within this year early Oct.
As to the report, Guterres reminded that the damage to these two countries has been estimated at more than US$1 milliard and total economic losses at US$400 million.
«Countries within the Caribbean need support now to rebuild, and to take effective climate action. We need a new generation of infrastructure that is risk-informed, to underpin resilient economies, communities and livelihoods. As outlined in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, we need to move from managing disasters to managing risks. That means tackling poverty, urbanization, weak governance, the decline of ecosystems, desertification and more. It means robust social protection systems and safety nets, and equitable access to social services and economic opportunities,» Guterres stressed.
