UN Anti-Crime Chief: Vigilance is watchword on World Tourism Day
28.09.2017 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of today, while speaking tp mark the World Tourism Day (observed annually Sept 27), Head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Yuriy Fedetov has said over 1 milliard people worldwide who travel each year can play a role in combatting illicit drugs, transnational crime, corruption and terrorism, UN Radio reports.
Fedotov has urged travelers to «remain watchful» as criminals are using transportation systems as «a delivery mechanism for misery and torment.»
Thus, as to him, for example, luggage can be hiding endangered wildlife species, priceless cultural heritage and illicit drugs, while people providing services at holiday destinations may have been coerced or threatened.
«By being observant and attentive, tourists can help catch the traffickers, save victims and prevent untold harm to wildlife, forests and culture,» he said, adding that these crimes also have an impact on sustainable development.
