As of today, the UN trade body, UNCTAD, and the Office of the UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region, have organized a meeting in Geneva focused on the role of trade in peace and prosperity development of the African Great Lakes Region, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, the meeting aims to explore the connection between humanitarian and development issues in order to promote security in a region where insecurity and political conflict, compounded by drought in some areas, has displaced more than seven million people and generated some 3.5 million refugees.
Reportedly, discussions will centre around the Great Lakes Regional Strategic Framework which fosters collaboration on solving and preventing conflicts and crisis in the region, whose countries include Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.
