Within this week, the 5th Global Soil Partnership Assembly (GSP) has taken place at the FAO HQ in Rome (Italy), UN Radio reports.
As to the report, the event has been organized by the FAO (UN Food and Agricultural Organization).
As to the report, the Assembly was focused upon the man-made soil pollution current problems. Delegates gathered to discuss the increasing problems associated with pollution in soil, which include excess nitrogen, and trace metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury.
Reportedly, while speaking within the Assembly, Ronald Vargas, FAO soils officer and Secretary of the GSP, has said that because soil pollution came in «so many forms» it was vital to intensify global collaboration to build up a body of reliable scientific evidence.
In meanwhile, President of the International Union of Soil Sciences, Rattan Lal, added that «combating soil pollution and pursuing sustainable soil management» was essential for addressing climate change.
As to him, the soil pollution has led to a reduction in crop productivity, and when pollutants enter the food chain it poses a risk to food security, water resources, the rural economy and human health.
