WHO: New ethics guidance launched for tuberculosis
23.03.2017 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a new ethics guidance for countries implementing the World Health Organization «End TB Strategy», UN Radio says referring to the WHO report.
The WHO admits it was determined to better defend those suffering from tuberculosis, which is the world most lethal infectious disease, claiming around 5,000 lives each day.
«TB strikes some of the world poorest people hardest,» WHO Director-General Margaret Chan says.
As to him, the WHO was «determined to overcome the stigma, discrimination and other barriers» that prevent sufferers accessing services.
As to Chan, poverty, malnutrition and poor sanitation are some of the factors that put people at heightened risk of TB and more than a third of all cases arent properly diagnosed.
As to the report, the new guidance urges patients to be given effective social support and equal access to healthcare, and calls for quarantine in isolation, only as a last resort.
