UN Relief Chief within Somalia to assess drought impact
07.03.2017 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator Stephen OBrien arrived into Somalia to assess the impact of the severe drought that had left the country on the brink of famine, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, Stephen OBrien called for stepped up efforts to enable aid workers to access drought-stricken areas of Somalia.
It is to be admitted, now more than six million Somalis, or about half of the population, are in need of assistance.
As to the report, Mr OBrien met with humanitarian partners, including donors, to discuss ways to scale up the response to save lives and avert a possible famine.
«Nearly three million people are unable to meet their daily food requirements and need urgent life-saving assistance. Almost 950,000 children under the age of five will be acutely malnourished this year, with 185,000 of those children at risk of death without immediate medical treatment,» UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq admits.
It is to be mentioned, prior to travelling to Somalia, the UN Relief Chief spent two days within South Sudan where famine had been declared in some areas.
