Guterres: UN must find "greater coherence and consistency" to build peace
10.01.2017 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The UN must bring «greater coherence and consistency» to the process of building and maintaining peace in a conflict-ridden world, UN Radio says referring to UN Secretary-General António Guterres yesterday report in Newsweek.
As to Guterres, the «greatest shortcoming» of the international community is «its failure to prevent conflict and maintain global security.»
While showing his vision for how the United Nations need to adapt and change within his period in charge, the UN Chief admitted he was calling for a «surge in diplomacy for peace».
As to Guterres, within those regions, where the wars rage already, «we need mediation, arbitration and creative diplomacy» backed by a Security Council whose members are prepared to «live up to their responsibilities».
He says that he personally and the UN at large would engage in conflict resolution «wherever and whenever we can add value.»
While touching upon the UN itself, Guterres says it is «time for us to recognize shortcomings and reform the way we work».
