Groisman: Gov't is working on achieving Ukrainian energy efficiency and independence

As of yesterday, within his visit to the United States, the Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groisman has met with the US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz in Washington within the framework of his visit to the United States, Government Portal reports.
As to the report, the sides discussed the plans of the Government towards achieving of the Ukrainian
energy independence.
Reportedly, Groisman emphasized that energy independence is a matter of national security of Ukraine. «Our task is to assure diversification and become an energy efficient state, and we are working on it now. Reform of energy sector is one of our important priorities,» Groisman admitted.
Reportedly, the PM informed about the Government first steps in this direction. Thus, on this year May 1, the Government introduced the single market-based gas price. This decision will help overcome corruption in this area, stimulate an increase in Ukrainian own gas output and energy efficiency.
At the same time, as to Groisman, the Government will provide social targeted support to those in need of such support following the introduction of the market-based gas price.
«Energy efficiency is an issue of our agenda,» Groisman emphasized.
As to Groisman, Government also draws special attention to nuclear power and alternative energy development. Besides, within short time the Government will adopt the strategy of development of hydropower.
As to the Prime Minister, the potential of the share of hydropower industry could be boosted to 15.5% in the balance of power generation in the country (up against 8.5% as of today).
Besides, the PM also stressed the need for modernization and restructuring of Ukrainian mines. He also said now the Government concentrates its efforts on the NJSC Naftogaz reform.
As to the report, Volodymyr Groisman thanked Ernest Moniz for the US having had provided support to the Ukrainian energy sector.
«The Government is absolutely committed to reforms, because Ukraine and Ukrainians need these reforms,» he noted and called for the bilateral cooperation deepening.
In turn, the US Energy Department representatives pledged their readiness to support Ukraine and cooperate towards achieving energy efficiency of Ukraine.
