While speaking in a statement to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on the last week Saturday, the UN Cief Ban Ki-moon said the world community needs to focus greater attention on the excluded and marginalized members of the human family, UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, the UN estimates that now globally over 900 million people continue to live in extreme poverty.
As to the report, Ban also said the world had made an extraordinary progress in reducing extreme poverty.
He stressed within the past 25 years, more than one billion people have been lifted above the poverty threshold, but 900 million still live below.
Reportedly, Ban warned that climate change, violent conflict and other disasters threaten to undo progress.
He added that by adopting the new Sustainable Development Goals within this year Sept, world leaders made a time-bound commitment to end poverty in all its forms, everywhere.
