President stands for holding elections in all territories of Donbas controlled by Ukrainian authorities
10.09.2015 12:36 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko stands for holding the local elections of Oct 25 in all territories of Donbas controlled by the Ukrainian authorities,
«I believe that the elections must be held everywhere except the areas located on the touch line, where there is a threat of spontaneous and unexpected shelling and where we cannot guarantee security,» he said at the meeting of the Regional Council Development yesterday, President Petro Poroshenko Press Office reports.
As to the report, while speaking of the above mentioned territories, the President assured that the elections will be held there as soon as the situation is stabilized.
«Immediately after stabilization, the Parliament will appoint the date of new elections there as well,» he said.
As to the report, Poroshenko emphasized that the issue of holding or non-holding of the elections was broadly discussed with Donbas authorities. As to him, there were substantial arguments for the non-holding. However, the President considers it crucially important to ensure free expression of will of the residents of Donbas.
«I realize all the risks and threats. The most difficult decision was related to Mariupol. It was really a tough one. But Mariupol has become a symbol of the Ukrainian Donbas and we cannot but provide an opportunity for Mariupol residents to vote for their future authorities,» Poroshenko said.
«We cannot have double standards. The elections must be held. The will of voters is a must for me,» the President said and expressed gratitude to the CEC for the adoption of respective decision.
