UN: "Lack of leadership" in Greece is making refugee crisis worse
19.08.2015 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The Greek government has shown a «lack of leadership» over the refugee crisis on its islands, UN Radio says referring to the UNHCR (the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) report on Tues.
As to the report, the local authorities have been «overwhelmed» by the situation.
Reportedly, in an appeal to Athens to take responsibility for what happens on its soil, the UNHCR also repeated its call for the European Union to - as it put it - «wake up» to the issue.
So far this year some 160,000 refugees and migrants have arrived in Greece, almost four times up against 2014, the UN agency says.
It is to be admitted, the latest warning from the UNHCR follows clashes between refugees and police on the Greek island of Kos. Thus, within the recent days officers there have resorted to using tear gas to maintain control in a stadium where hundreds of people had gathered for registration.
