New vaccine to protect children from diarrhoea in Kiribati
06.08.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Children on the Pacific island of Kiribati will be better protected from a potentially killer virus following the introduction of a new vaccine, UN Radio says referring to the UN Childrens Fund (UNICEF) report.
As to the report, the small island nation is one of the first countries in the Pacific to roll out the rotavirus vaccine.
It is to be reminded, within the past five years Kiribati has experienced repeated diarrhoea outbreaks.
Many have been caused by rotavirus, the most common cause of severe diarrhoea among infants and young children. Children have been hospitalized and some under the age of five have died.
Thus, the UN Childrens Fund (UNICEF), which is supporting the roll-out of the vaccine, assures it will help to reduce the number of children in Kiribati dying from preventable illness.
It is to be admitted, the Pacific island nation is 133rd out of 187 countries on the UNs human development index.
