UN: Efforts to reach new climate deal "must accelerate"
30.06.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Governments must accelerate their efforts to reach a universal climate agreement in France next December, UN Radio says referring to the
the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon report made on Mon at an event at UN Headquarters focused on climate change.
It is to be admitted, only 10 negotiating days remain before the world leaders meet in the French capital, Paris.
Ban Ki-moon said it is now when the true leadership is needed from the highest levels.
Besides, Ban Ki-moon stressed that the global communitys journey towards bold climate action is at a critical moment.
Also, he said there are only a few short years left to do what is needed to have a reasonable chance of staying within the internationally agreed temperature rise threshold of 2 degrees Celsius.
«If we fail, we will condemn our children and grandchildren to a future of climate chaos. If we succeed, we can set the world on course for greater stability, better health and stronger economies that benefit all. All countries can and must be part of the solution,» Ban Ki-moon stressed.
Besides, Mr. Ban highlighted what he believes a meaningful climate agreement could include.
As to Mr. Ban, the climate agreement must commit to building a low-carbon future, support clean energy investments, and be flexible to adapt to new ambitious goals over time.
