Rebuilding of health systems urged in Ebola countries
17.04.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The health systems in the three countries in West Africa most affected by the Ebola outbreak need to be rebuilt to avoid future health emergencies, UN Radio says referring to Margaret Chan, the Head of the WHO (UNs World Health Organization) report.
As to Chan, the spread of the deadly disease in West Africa has already slowed down, but the international community is asked not to become complacent.
As to her, over 10,000 people have died over the past year in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the three countries in West Africa most affected by the Ebola virus. However, the outbreak is now under control.
Besides, she stressed the focus should shift to restoring the health services of the affected countries.
«After years of conflict and civil unrest, the health systems in these three countries were fragile to begin with and they collapsed during the Ebola outbreak. The focus now is on rebuilding health systems that reduce the risks of experiencing another health emergency of this magnitude in the future,» she said.
The international community is, however, being warned not to become complacent.
It is to be admitted, the outbreak is so far not over. Thus, within the last week 37 new cases of Ebola in the region were registered.
