UN: “Call to action" to employ people with autism
02.04.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The UN is launching an employment program «call to action», inviting businesses to make concrete commitments to employ people with autism, UN Radio says referring to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon report made on the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, marked every year on 2 April.
It is to be admitted, autism is a lifelong developmental disability that results from a neurological disorder affecting the functioning of the brain. Autism is characterized by impairments in social interaction and problems with verbal and non-verbal communication.
However, despite these developmental disabilities, the UN Secretary-General highlighted that people with autism have enormous potential, often with remarkable visual, artistic or academic skills.
He reminded that thanks to assistive technologies, non-verbal persons with autism can communicate and share their hidden capabilities.
However, Ban Ki-moon admitted even where autism awareness is most advanced, the UN estimates that more than 80 per cent of adults with the disability are unemployed.
So, he said it is important for employers to understand their unique skills, and to enable work environments where they can excel.
The UN chief stressed this mission can only be achieved with appropriate vocational training and adequate support alongside a recruitment process that can allow people to successfully integrate into workforces around the world.
