WHO: Tool launched to reduce marketing of unhealthy foods to children in Europe
20.02.2015 09:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
A new guide to help reduce the marketing of unhealthy foods to children across Europe has been launched by the WHO (World Health Organization), UN Radio says referring to the World Health Organization (WHO) recent report.
The report admits that foods high in energy, fats, sugars or salt leads to unhealthy diets and contributes to obesity in children.
It is to be admitted, the agency has developed its nutrient profile model after extensive consultation with European countries.
As to the report, all over Europe children are still regularly exposed to marketing that promotes foods and drinks high in energy, saturated fats, trans fatty acids, free sugars or salt.
Reportedly, despite progress in some countries, government action to restrict such marketing remains less than optimal.
The report says one of the reasons for this is the challenge of identifying foods whose marketing should be restricted whether on television, the Internet, billboards or any other channels.
Reportedly, the WHO’s Regional Office for Europe has developed a nutrient profile model to help its countries establish the criteria that identify such foods and drinks.
The report says countries will be able to use the model as it is or after adapting it to their circumstances to develop and implement policies to restrict food marketing.
