UN: Thousands of people saved thanks to better early warning systems
23.01.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Thousands of lives have been saved thanks to greater understanding of the dangers posed by natural disasters, UN Radio says referring to the UN recent report.
As to the report, it has been a decade since the adoption of the Hyogo Framework for Action, a ten-year plan to make the world safer from natural hazards.
Since its adoption, there have been more than 3,400 internationally reported disasters triggered by hazards such as earthquakes, floods, storms, drought or heatwaves.
«The Secretary-General says that early warning systems, improved weather forecasting and greater understanding of the dangers posed by natural disasters have helped to save thousands of lives. The Framework was adopted just weeks after the Indian Ocean Tsunami, which as you would recall claimed some 227,000 lives,» UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric says.
As to the report, the UN estimates that about 90 per cent of deaths from disasters occur in low and middle-income countries.
There have reportedly been significant reductions in weather-related mortality in several countries, but economic losses now regularly surpass US$200 milliard annually.
