As of last week, Andrei Pilipchuk, Head of the Atmospheric Air and Ozone Layer Office of the Atmospheric Air and Waters Resources Impact Department of the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry, told a national action plan will be worked out in Belarus to reduce mercury content in environmental components, Belarus Radio reports referring to BelTA.
As to the report, the official said that after Belarus had signed the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the convention is to be ratified and, as a result, the national action plan to reduce mercury content in environmental components will be worked out.
As to Pilipchuk, the effort will be divided into three areas. First of all, all the industrial products that may contain mercury will have to be inventoried. Second, the real manufacturing processes that use mercury will be looked at. Third, air will be monitored throughout the country taking into account emissions of Belarusian enterprises.
It is to be admitted, Belarus joined the Minamata Convention on Mercury in New York during the UN Climate Summit. The document was signed by Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich. Belarus’ joining of the Convention is expected to enable the country to become a full-fledged participant of the international process of regulating mercury handling.
