UN chief urges tackling of "virus of fear and misinformation" surrounding Ebola
25.09.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Countries across the world are being urged by the United Nations Secretary-General to fight what he has called the «virus of fear and misinformation» surrounding Ebola, UN Radio reports.
As to report, on Thursday Ban Ki-moon is going to convene a meeting at UN headquarters in New York to discuss how to scale up the response to the Ebola virus.
It is to be admitted, some 3,000 people have died in Guinea, as well as Liberia and Sierra Leone since the latest outbreak of the disease six months ago.
Reportedly, while speaking in the General Assembly on Wednesday, Mr. Ban said countries facing the outbreak need support on a number of fronts, including more medical staff, equipment and food.
«We must also fight the virus of fear and misinformation. Bans on travel or transport will not keep Ebola from getting out, but will keep medical personnel and supplies from getting in. We need to isolate people affected by Ebola but not the nations struggling to cope with it,» Mr. Ban admitted.
In meanwhile, the UN has responded to what the Secretary-General has called an «unprecedented crisis» by setting up an «unprecedented health operation,» the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response or UNMEER.
It is to be admitted, the mission headquartered in Ghana will mobilize resources to reinforce the work being done by the countries and communities affected.
