24.09.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
A summit aimed at galvanizing international action on climate change took place at UN on Tue, UN Radio reports.
As to report, the Summit was lauded by the UN Secretary-General as an historic occasion.
Over 120 world leaders gathered at the UN in New York at the Climate Summit convened by Ban Ki-moon. He said it had been a success.
«Today was a great day a historic day. Never before have so many leaders gathered to commit to action on climate change,» Mr. Ban said.
As to report, world governments as well as the private sector and civil society joined the summit.
Dozens of new initiatives were launched including commitments by the worldwide financial sector to mobilize $200 billion for climate change mitigation in developing countries.
Governments partnered with the oil and gas industry to reduce methane emissions.
There was also a commitment to halve deforestation by 2020 and eradicate it fully the following decade.
It is to be admitted, the summit comes ahead of global climate conference in Paris next year, where its hoped nations will agree a binding climate deal.
Besides, the Secretary-General also said the meeting in New York showed that the world can rise to what he called the «climate challenge.»
