Voices of indigenous peoples must be heard, UN expert says
18.09.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The voices of indigenous peoples must be heard and they must be consulted on issues that affect them, including rights to land and resources, UN Radio says referring to the Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, appeal made to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
It is to be admitted, presently the UN estimates the number of indigenous people as 370 million living in 90 countries (15 per cent of the worlds poor).
There are however policies at the domestic and international levels that could help to advance the rights of indigenous peoples, Ms. Tauli-Carpuz noted.
But, the expert adds, there are still numerous obstacles preventing them from fully enjoying those rights.
As to Ms. Tauli-Carpuz, now many indigenous peoples struggle to remain on their lands and retain the right to their natural resources, while others have been removed from their lands, denied their languages and traditional ways.
