The world can no longer afford to burn its way through prosperity, UN Radio says quoting the UN Secretary-General as speaking during the launch of a new climate economy report on Tuesday.
Released by a commission of global leaders, the report has set concrete recommendations for sustainable, low carbon economic growth.
The UN new report also aims to drive action by world leaders, business executives and investors ahead of a major UN summit on climate change being held in New York next week.
With greenhouse gas emissions at record levels, Mr. Ban added «there was no time to lose».
«Scientists have long warned of the potential implications of climate change for economic growth. We can no longer burn our way to prosperity. We must manage climate-risk for sustained and sustainable climate progress. We need a structural transformation in the global economy. This report argues for a new model where economic growth and climate action are mutually reinforcing and it shows how we can build it.»
Besides, the Secretary-General reminded the UN Climate Summit is expected to deliver on the recommendations made in the report.
