UN: First World Day against Trafficking in Persons observed
30.07.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Today people around the word are being urged by the UN Secretary-General to «open their eyes to the crime of human trafficking and their hearts to the victims,» UN Radio reports.
As to report, while marking the first World Day against Trafficking in Persons, Mr Ban Ki-moon asked people to donate to the UN campaign, «Have a Heart for Victims of Human Trafficking».
Women and children make up the majority of people trafficked. They are exploited for sex and forced to work in conditions that resemble slavery.
Human trafficking is a callous global industry that denies victims their rights and dignity and generates billions of dollars for organized criminal networks, he noted.
«The United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund is making a real difference. The Trust Fund supports valuable non-governmental organizations such as CAST. I call on all Member States to contribute generously to this important Trust Fund. As we prepare to mark the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, on 30 July, let us make concrete commitments that will end this threat, advance justice and empower the survivors,» Mr. Ban said.
Countries are also being called on to ratify and fully implement the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its Protocol on Trafficking in Persons, in order to stop the crime.
