Ukrainian President expects that European Council will strongly support Ukraine – meeting with Foreign Ministers of Poland, Latvia and Iceland

As of yesterday, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko held a meeting with Foreign Minister of Poland Radosław Sikorski, Foreign Minister of Latvia Edgar Rinkevich and Foreign Minister of Iceland Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, President Petro Poroshenko Press Office reports.
As to the Head of State, consideration of the Ukrainian issue at tomorrow’s meeting of the European Council will demonstrate the degree of unity in Europe. «The people of Ukraine paid a very high price for their European choice. We have chosen the European path for our country and now, we are defending it,» the President noted informing that 258 servicemen had died since the beginning of the escalation in the Donbas.
Petro Poroshenko drew attention to the fact that Russia continued the supply of weapons and militants through the border. The Head of State emphasizes that currently, it goes about the security of not only Ukraine, but also the whole Europe. «How can we accept the annexation of the Crimea, downing of our plane, shelling of civilians by the Russian party? It is unacceptable,» he said.
«Ukraine expects strong support from the European Council. These are the most crucial days in the history of Ukraine. This is a real battle for our independence. It is extremely important for us to feel solidarity of the whole European Union,» the Head of State stressed.
As to the President, currently, the people in some parts of Luhansk and Donetsk regions are virtually taken hostage by terrorists and live in terrible conditions.
The Head of State expressed gratitude to Latvia, Lithuania and Romania for the ratification of the Association Agreement. «We have crossed the Rubicon and will never come back to the Soviet past,» the President underlined the European aspirations of Ukrainians.
The meeting was also attended by Director General for International and Security Affairs of the Foreign Ministry of Iceland Hermann Ingólfsson, Ambassador of Poland Henrik Litvin and Ambassador of Latvia Argita Daudze.
On behalf of the Ukraine, the meeting was also attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Pavlo Klimkin and Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Valeriy Chaly.
