Ebola infections in West Africa reach almost 1000
16.07.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
An estimated 964 cases of Ebola have been reported in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, UN Radio says referring to the WHO (World Health Organization) report. So far, more than 600 people have died from the virus. As to the report, in Guinea alone, six new cases and three deaths have been reported in the last few days. The disease causes severe haemorrhaging and can kill up to 90 per cent of those infected. It spreads through direct contacts with the blood and body fluids of infected animals or people. UN Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, says WHO is following developments closely. «The organization is monitoring the situation and increasing its efforts to reduce the number of cases. A new Sub-Regional Coordination Centre in Conakry is being set-up to help control and coordinate response efforts in the three countries,» Mr. Farhan admits. There are no known cures or preventative vaccines for Ebola, although outbreaks dont generally lead to large scale infections.
