Tanzania's Selous Game Reserve is put on List of World Heritage in Danger
19.06.2014 09:36 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania has been inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger because of the decimation of wildlife populations as a result of poaching, NRCU reports.
The decision was taken by the UN cultural agency (UNESCO)’s World Heritage Committee which is meeting in Doha, in Qatar.
The Selous Game Reserve, covering 50,000 square kilometers, is one of the largest protected areas in Africa.
It is renowned for its populations of elephant, black rhinoceros, cheetah, giraffe, hippopotamus and crocodile.
The Reserve also has an exceptionally high variety of habitats, including miombo woodlands, open grasslands, riverine forests and swamps.
UNESCO says that makes it a valuable laboratory for ongoing ecological and biological processes.
The World Heritage Committee called on the international community, including ivory transit and destination countries, to support Tanzania in the fight against poaching.
