UN Chief calls for stronger laws to protect the elderly
16.06.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Within last week the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the UN Member States to enact and enforce stronger laws and strategies to protect elderly people from abuse.
UN Secretary-General made this appeal ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day observed every year on June 15, UN Radio reports.
Mr. Ban said the elderly people in all societies can be vulnerable to physical, psychological and financial abuse. Older women are at particular risk due to widespread discriminatory attitudes and practices.
Mr. Ban Ki-moon admitted the elder people abuse is an «under-acknowledged social, public health and human rights issue».
All human beings are born with equal and inalienable rights, he noted, and have the right to age with dignity, respected by their families and communities, free of neglect, abuse and violence, he stressed.
